What Is YKI Test?

Definition

The YKI test evaluates Finnish or Swedish proficiency across four skills: speaking, writing, listening, and reading. Each skill is assessed independently and assigned a YKI level (1–6) corresponding to CEFR levels A1–C2.

Meaning in English

The YKI test is Finland’s official language proficiency exam covering all four language skills.

Meaning in Finnish

YKI-tutkinto

Why It Matters for YKI

Each skill receives its own level, so a candidate can have different levels in writing and speaking. Universities and authorities look at the writing level separately for tasks that require written Finnish.

Example

A candidate scores level 4 (B2) in writing but level 3 (B1) in speaking, demonstrating stronger written than spoken Finnish.
