To demonstrate intermediate and advanced reasoning, you must be able to contrast ideas and explain consequences. Relying only on "ja" (and) and "mutta" (but) will keep your score low. Incorporate these powerful linking words instead:

• Kuitenkin (However): Placed after the first word of a sentence or at the beginning.
  Uusi laki on hyvä. Se vaatii kuitenkin paljon rahaa. (The new law is good. However, it requires a lot of money.)
• Vaikka (Although / Even though): Perfect for creating complex sentences.
  Vaikka sataa vettä, menen lenkille. (Even though it is raining, I am going for a jog.)
• Siksi (Therefore / That is why): Used to express a result.

1. Starting every sentence with "Että": Että (that) is a subordinate conjunction. It connects two clauses (e.g., Tiedän, että olet oikeassa). Never start a new, independent sentence with että in a formal writing task.
2. Overusing "Niin": In spoken Finnish (puhekieli), people constantly use niin to connect thoughts. In the YKI writing test, avoid using niin as a filler word. Rely on siksi or joten (so) instead.
