Scoring

What Is Vocabulary Range?

Definition

Vocabulary range (sanavarasto) is a YKI writing scoring criterion that evaluates the breadth and appropriateness of the vocabulary used. A wide, accurate vocabulary that fits the topic and register pushes the score toward B2; a limited, repetitive vocabulary keeps it at B1 or below.

Meaning in English

Vocabulary range measures how wide and appropriate the candidate’s word choice is.

Meaning in Finnish

Sanavarasto

Why It Matters for YKI

Vocabulary range is one of the clearest signals separating B1 from B2 writing. Using topic-specific terms and avoiding repetition is essential for a level 4 score.

Example

A B2 writer uses "edistää" (to advance) and "vaikutus" (impact) instead of repeating "tekee" (makes) throughout the essay.
